Wed Apr 3 201319:38Coke blows save as Twins come back vs. Tigers
Phil Coke blew his first save of the season Wednesday, allowing a walk-off, two-run double to the Twins' Eduardo Escobar.
It should have gone for a sac fly, as a miscommunication by the Tigers' outfielders allowed the ball to drop. Still, it would have been a blown save for Coke either way. Coke has entered the game with one out in the ninth inning in each of the first two games, though that simply could have been because the Twins' lineup is littered with lefties and switch-hitters. Joaquin Benoit pitched the eighth inning in the first two contests and stated in to face one hitter in the ninth. The Tigers' closer situation remains up in the air and a headache for fantasy owners.

Mon Apr 1 201319:48Phil Coke records save in Tigers' win
Phil Coke got the final two outs Monday to earn the save for the Tigers in a 4-2 game against the Twins.
Manager Jim Leyland used his committee well today, letting Joaquin Benoit stay in to retire Josh Willingham to start the ninth after he pitched a scoreless eighth. Coke then came in and retired Justin Morneau and Ryan Doumit to finish the game. Coke is probably the early favorite for saves in the Tigers pen, with Benoit and Octavio Dotel next in line.

Mon Mar 11 201316:53Phil Coke gives up three runs to Mets
Phil Coke surrendered three runs and four hits in an inning of work versus the Mets on Monday.
Coke had pitched five scoreless innings this spring, so one bad outing doesn't make much of a difference. Still, Coke may well be the current favorite to open the season as Detroit's closer, making his exploits well worth watching.

Wed Feb 27 201316:05Phil Coke pitches scoreless inning
Phil Coke pitched his second scoreless inning of the spring Wednesday against the Braves.
Bruce Rondon has been wild so far, so Coke might be the current favorite to begin the season as the Tigers' closer after his impressive postseason. Of course, he was terrible against right-handers in the regular season last year, and he'd likely be more valuable to the Tigers put back into a matchup role. Fantasy leaguers need to keep an eye on him, though.

Sun Feb 17 201309:45Phil Coke leaves for personal reasons
Phil Coke left Saturday's workout due to what Tigers manager Jim Leyland referred to as "personal reasons."
Leyland didn't offer more than that or say when Coke might return. At this point, though, it's probably safe to assume he won't be gone long.

Fri Jan 18 201315:32Phil Coke avoids arbitration
Tigers avoided arbitration with LHP Phil Coke by agreeing to a one-year contract.
The financial details are not yet known. Coke, who was arbitration-eligible for the second time, posted a 4.00 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 66 appearances for the Tigers in 2012. He could wind up with some save chances in 2013 if Detroit goes with a committee at closer.

Tue Oct 16 201223:49Phil Coke notches another save
Phil Coke recorded his second save in as many games in Tuesday's ALCS Game 3 victory over the Yankees.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland pulled Justin Verlander with one out in the ninth after he had thrown 132 pitches. He then handed the ball to Coke, who allowed two two-out singles before getting Raul Ibanez swinging to end it with a nasty 3-2 slider. Leyland has gone with matchups in the ninth with Jose Valverde struggling, and so far they've led to Coke.

After entering the game in the eighth inning, he retired the first two batters before things got out of hand. Collin Balester took over with the bases loaded and promptly issued a grand slam to Brandon Inge. As a result, Coke's ERA balloons from 2.92 to 4.85.

Phil Coke got the win in relief after pitching a scoreless innings Sunday in the Tigers' 6-3 defeat of the Phillies.

No word yet on the financial terms. Coke was eligible for arbitration this winter for the first time in his career. He made close to the MLB minimum in 2011 while posting a 4.47 ERA and 69/40 K/BB ratio in 108 2/3 innings.

Thu Oct 13 201120:03Phil Coke earns save
Phil Coke nailed down a save for the Tigers Wednesday in uneasy fashion, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings in the ALCS Game 5 win over the Rangers.
Coke looked good in the eighth, getting a groundout and a strikeout. The ninth inning wasn't so easy, though, as he gave up a double, an RBI single and a walk before getting Mike Napoli to ground into a fielder's choice to end it. Coke was getting the save chance with both Jose Valverde and Joaquin Benoit overworked in recent days. He'll be back in a setup role for Game 6 with Valverde available.

Wed Oct 5 201105:03Coke fails to keep Tigers in game
Phil Coke surrendered three runs in an inning of relief in Tuesday's ALDS loss to the Yankees.
It was Coke's first appearance of the 2011 playoffs. With Detroit trailing 4-1, He retired three out of four batters in a scoreless seventh inning. But he was removed after yielding three straight singles to start the eighth. Before the frame was over, all three runners had crossed the plate, putting the game out of reach for the Tigers.

Fri Jul 1 201109:50Phil Coke to help set up
Tigers manager Jim Leyland plans to use Phil Coke, who was recently moved from the rotation to the bullpen, in the sixth and seventh innings.
Coke is obviously stretched out enough to be used in long relief, but Leyland plans to have him help set up closer Jose Valverde. "We'll probably use him late - meaning sixth, seventh inning," Leyland said. Coke has been solid out of the bullpen the last two years, and the move should add more pep to his fastball, which, according to Fangraphs.com, has come in at 91.1 mph this season after he averaged 93.6 mph last year.

Thu Jun 30 201110:32Tigers removed Coke from rotation
The Tigers have removed Phil Coke from the starting rotation.
It was a worthwhile experiment, but the 28-year-old southpaw had allowed 16 earned runs over his last three starts. The last straw was Wednesday night against the Mets, when he gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and two walks over just four innings of work. He'll now head back to the bullpen, where he has enjoyed success in the past. Charlie Furbush is slated to replace him in the starting rotation.

Wed Jun 29 201123:35Phil Coke lit up by Mets in 16-9 loss
Phil Coke got battered by the Mets on Wednesday evening, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and two walks in just four innings of Detroit's 16-9 loss.
He struck out one in falling to 1-8 on the season. The dismal outing ballooned his 4.32 ERA to 4.91, while his WHIP jumped from 1.40 to 1.48. The owner of a 7.20 ERA in 25 innings of work this month, Coke is rapidly running out of chances to prove himself in Detroit's rotation.

Mon Jun 13 201123:27Phil Coke effective in no-decision
Phil Coke allowed just four hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings of work on Monday evening, taking a no-decision in Detroit's 2-1, 10-inning win over the Rays.
He struck out three and walked none, throwing only 82 pitches. The scoreless outing was just his second in 11 starts this season. The owner of a 3.69 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, he'll take on the Rockies in Colorado this weekend.

Wed Jun 8 201123:39Coke roughed up in return from disabled list
Making his first start since May 23 on Wednesday, Phil Coke didn't have his best stuff against the Rangers, allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits and three walks in five innings of a Tigers loss.
He failed to record a strikeout. Coke is now 1-6 on the season, but still owns a fairly healthy 4.11 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. He should remain a fine own in AL-only leagues going forward.

Tigers activated LHP Phil Coke from the 15-day disabled list.

He had a 3.81 ERA and 30/16 K/BB ratio over his first 52 innings before suffering a bone bruise in his right foot last month.
