Sun Jun 14 201508:08Matusz will come off suspended list for Sunday's game
Matusz will come off the suspended list for Sunday's game, MASN Sports reports.
Matusz served an eight-game suspension for a foreign substance on his arm. He returns to Baltimore's bullpen, where he will be the top left-hander available aside from Zach Britton. Matusz has walked 11 batters in 18.1 innings this season, which is a number he will look to improve.

Matusz lost his appeal and will be forced to serve his eight-game suspension, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
Back on May 23, Matusz was ejected for having a foreign substance on his arm in a late-game appearance against Miami. With the appeal committee upholding the length of the original suspension, Matusz figures to begin serving the suspension immediately with an eye toward returning sometime next weekend.

The appeal hearing on Matusz's eight-game suspension will take place Jun. 3, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports.
The length of his suspension will be decided on that date and it will go into effect immediately. Until then he will continue to pitch out of the Orioles' bullpen.

Matusz - who was ejected from Saturday's appearance for a foreign substance found on his arm - will appeal an eight-game suspension imposed by the league Monday.
Matusz was ejected in the 12th inning after facing two batters, and it could cost him the same amount of games as Brewers pitcher Will Smith, who received the same suspension from the league. He will remain available to pitch until his appeal is heard, at which point the league will determine whether or not to uphold it.

Matusz was ejected in the top of the 12th inning Saturday after umpires found a foreign substance on his arm, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.
Matusz faced two batters and gotten both of them out, one with a strikeout. He walked off the mound without showing visible anger. He will likely face a suspension from this incident, similar to Milwaukee Brewers' pitcher Will Smith who was caught in a similar incident earlier this week.
Wed May 13 201517:25Matusz available Wednesday
Matusz is available Wednesday, but the Orioles revealed he was not available Monday or Tuesday after taking a comebacker off his thumb in Sunday's game, MASN Sports reports.
When healthy, Matusz is the top left-hander out of the bullpen outside of Zach Britton, the ninth inning option. Matusz is sitting at a 2.92 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, but he is has just a 7::8 K/BB ratio.

Matusz pitched in long relief Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in three innings.
The Orioles took advantage of Matusz, who was stretched out this spring, as the left-hander threw 59 pitches while mopping up for Bud Norris. There is a slight possibility the Orioles could install Matusz in the rotation, but that would leave closer Zach Britton as the only left-hander in the bullpen.

Matusz appears to have gotten some attention as a trade target this spring, MASN Sports reports.
Matusz has drawn attention from the Mets. The Orioles have used him as a left-handed reliever for several years, but he is not a lockdown reliever with a career 4.44 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. Matusz saw a decline in his numbers from 2013 to 2014 (2.91 ERA to 4.00 ERA and 1.16 WHIP to 1.32 WHIP). The Orioles could trade Matusz and use Wesley Wright as the primary left-handed middle reliever.

Matusz could be stretched out to 60 pitches in his next spring training start, the Baltimore Sun reports.
There has been no news that Matusz is in contention for a rotation spot. The Orioles might be looking at Matusz as a long reliever. This would be a bit of a surprise considering he had been expected to be the team's top situational lefty. Matusz's role might depend on other pitchers in camp. If Ubaldo Jimenez is squeezed out of the rotation, he would likely be the long reliever. If Miguel Gonzalez or Kevin Gausman do not make the rotation, either would likely be sent to the minors. The perplexing thing is that if Matusz is the long reliever, they might go with a less proven option as a situational lefthander in T.J. McFarland or Wesley Wright and the Orioles will be in a roster pinch if that is the case.

Matusz (non-throwing shoulder) threw a scoreless inning and allowed one hit with one strikeout Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Matusz had a cortisone shot Monday and made it back to the mound just three days later. The injury does not appear to be a concern, especially since it is Matusz's non-throwing shoulder. Matusz appears to be the top lefty out of the bullpen after Andrew Miller departed in the offseason.
Wed Mar 4 201523:44Matusz had cortisone shot in non-throwing shoulder Monday
Matusz had a cortisone shot in his non-throwing shoulder Monday, MASN Sports reports.
Matusz strained the shoulder about six weeks ago while bench pressing. He has not struggled with any significant injury in his career and it is a good thing the injury is on the non-throwing shoulder. Matusz threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is scheduled to pitch in a split-squad game Thursday.
Tue Jan 20 201509:54The Orioles avoided arbitration with Matusz
The Orioles avoided arbitration with Matusz, agreeing Friday to a $3.2 million salary for the 2015 season, MASN Sports reports.
Matusz now has one year of arbitration remaining. Matusz had an up-and-down season in 2014, but he matched his 2013 numbers almost perfectly, with a 3.48 ERA in 63 games. The Orioles lost confidence with him and traded for Andrew Miller down the stretch. Matusz has been involved in trade rumors as the Orioles have a number of left-handed relievers stockpiled heading into spring training.
Fri Oct 10 201412:00Matusz added to Baltimore's ALCS roster
Matusz was added to Baltimore's ALCS roster, MASN Sports reports.
It was a bit of a surprise that Matusz was left off the ALDS roster after spending the entire season with the Orioles. Matusz did not have a great regular season, but he was not bad either, holding a 3.48 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He lagged just a bit behind his 2013 numbers and that may have been a contributing reason that the Orioles traded for Andrew Miller, who dominated in relief in the ALDS. Matusz will probably only be used as a left-handed specialist.
Tue Sep 23 201400:42Matusz retired only batter he faced in Tuesday's loss to Yankees
Matusz retired the only batter he faced in Tuesday's loss to the Yankees.
Matusz has not been used much in September, as Monday marked just his sixth appearance. He faced only one hitter in two of those appearances. It appears Matusz's usage has become a bit more sparse since the Andrew Miller trade, though he is on pace for his same innings total as 2013 thanks to more use earlier in the season. The Orioles may also be resting Matusz for the playoffs.

Matusz appears to be out of his late game role as Andrew Miller entered in the eighth inning of his Orioles debut Friday against the Mariners.
Matusz struck out the side in a scoreless inning out of the bullpen Thursday, but the Miller acquisition likely presents a role change for Matusz. Though he may pitch earlier in games, Matusz should pitch in high leverage situations. He did not allow a run in 8.1 innings during ten appearances in the month of July.
Fri Apr 11 201421:53Brian Matusz (illness) not at park on Friday
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said after Friday's loss to the Blue Jays that Brian Matusz (illness) wasn't at the park with the team.
Showalted said that Matusz went to the hospital, but didn't elaborate any further on the situation. It sounds as though he'll be unavailable on Saturday as well.

Mon Mar 24 201415:34Tommy Hunter goes two before rainout
Brian Matusz pitched a couple of scoreless frames before Monday's Red Sox-Orioles game was postponed due to rain.
Despite making his second start of the spring today, Matusz remains set to pitch in relief this season. He should be more than a specialist out of the pen, and he might even get the odd save chance if Tommy Hunter struggles. Still, he probably won't be worth using in AL-only leagues unless Hunter gets off to a bad start.

Tue Mar 11 201417:01Brian Matusz perfect for two innings
Brian Matusz pitched two perfect innings, striking out three, in his return to the mound Tuesday.
Matusz had to go to the emergency room due to his peanut allergy on Sunday night, but it didn't cause him to miss an outing. He's pitched exactly two innings all three times out. It appears that the Orioles don't want to disappoint him by removing him from the rotation competition this early. However, they're also not really building him up as they would a starter.

Tue Mar 11 201411:19Matusz hits emergency room after peanut scare
Brian Matusz went to the emergency room after an allergic reaction to peanuts on Sunday night.
He may not pitch on Tuesday for precautionary reasons, but he'll be back soon. Matusz broke through in the bullpen last year, and Baltimore will rely on him heavily in April with Troy Patton serving a 25-game suspension. Matusz held left-handed hitters to a .168 average in 2013.

Sun Mar 2 201417:03Brian Matusz goes two scoreless
Brian Matusz got the start and pitched a couple of scoreless innings against the Red Sox on Sunday.
While the Orioles are following through on giving Matusz a look as a starter, it's really hard to imagine him beginning the season anywhere except the bullpen. There isn't as much of a need in the rotation now following the Ubaldo Jimenez signing, and there's a greater one in the pen with fellow left-hander Troy Patton serving a 25-game suspension.
