Sun Apr 6 201411:35Casey Kelly scratched due to sore elbow
Casey Kelly was scratched from a simulated game Saturday due to soreness in his surgically-repaired right elbow.
The good news is that the soreness is in the back of the elbow, not the front where he underwent Tommy John surgery last April. The Padres are hoping that Kelly will be ready to throw off a mound again as soon as Monday or Tuesday. "Everybody thinks on the medical side in Peoria that he'll make that simulated game," manager Bud Black said. Kelly is hoping to be available for the Pads sometime before the All-Star break.

Casey Kelly (elbow) has advance to throwing live batting practice.
Kelly underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last April and probably won't be ready to pitch in a minor league game for another several weeks. The talented 24-year-old right-hander is doubtful to make an appearance at the major league level before June.

Fri Mar 22 201312:50Casey Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery
Casey Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery during the first week of April.
The procedure had been recommended last week, with the diagnosis evidently backed up by a second opinion. Kelly was shut down for three months of action last season with elbow trouble, and evidently the ligament didn't totally heal, as it started to bother him again this spring. He'll miss all of the 2013 season.

Thu Mar 14 201318:41Casey Kelly likely facing Tommy John surgery
Casey Kelly has micro-tears in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and is likely facing Tommy John surgery.
Kelly will seek a second opinion but admitted that he's "prepared (himself) for the worst." The right-hander was shut down for three months of action last season with elbow trouble, and evidently the ligament didn't totally heal. If he does undergo the operation, obviously he would miss all of 2013.

Wed Mar 13 201318:52Padres' Kelly could need Tommy John surgery
Padres manager Bud Black said that Casey Kelly could require Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
"That's the part of the elbow we're concerned about," Black added. The skipper said that Kelly will talk with his family and might seek a second opinion, but it's looking like all signs are pointing to season-ending surgery. Kelly was shut down for three months last season with elbow issues, but it seems unlikely that the Pads will take the rest and rehab route this time.

Wed Mar 13 201317:35Casey Kelly getting tests on sore right elbow
Casey Kelly will undergo a range of tests this week on his sore right (pitching) elbow.
Kelly hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game since March 7 because of right elbow discomfort and the Padres are obviously concerned that he might be dealing with something serious. The young starter also had elbow problems last spring and was shut down for three months as a precautionary measure. The Friars will hope to have some answers soon.

Mon Oct 1 201218:31Padres shut down Casey Kelly
The Padres have shut down Casey Kelly.
Kelly was scheduled to start Tuesday against the Brewers, but Anthony Bass will get the nod. He is also expected to skip the Arizona Fall League. The 22-year-old right-hander is healthy, but the Padres don't want to push him any further. Kelly had a 6.21 ERA and 26/10 K/BB ratio in 29 innings over his first six major league starts, but the Padres are hoping he can be a rotation staple for a long time.

Fri Sep 28 201201:51Casey Kelly gives up five runs in loss
Casey Kelly was charged with five runs in 4 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Dodgers.
The floodgates opened after Kelly hit Shane Victorino with a breaking ball with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, forcing in the first of four runs the Dodgers scored in the frame. Victorino, though, appeared to offer at the pitch, and if Kelly had gotten the call, he would have been through five having allowed just one run. Unfortunately, it just wasn't to be tonight.

Sat Sep 22 201201:31Casey Kelly goes 4 1/3 innings in loss
Casey Kelly allowed two runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of Friday's loss to the Giants.
Kelly struck out three and walked four in falling to 2-2. The non-quality start was his third in five outings since joining the Padres rotation, while he's sporting a 5.55 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 20/8 K/BB ratio through 24 1/3 frames. Kelly remains a high-upside talent, but he probably won't be worth a pick in 12-14 team mixed leagues next spring.

Sun Sep 16 201200:58Casey Kelly beats the Rockies
Casey Kelly allowed three runs -- two earned -- in six innings Saturday in a win over the Rockies.
Kelly struck out six and walked none in the win. He was coming off two poor starts, including one versus Colorado in Coors Field, but he allowed just one extra-base hit tonight. While he's thus far proven to be homer-prone, with five homers allowed in 20 innings, he has a nifty 17/4 K/BB ratio.

Sat Sep 8 201223:52Kelly shelled as Padres fall to D'Backs
Casey Kelly was shelled for six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.
Kelly yielded eight hits and struck out only two. He has struggled mightily since blanking the Braves in his major league debut on August 27 and should be avoided in fantasy leagues down the stretch. The 22-year-old has a bright future, but he's clearly not quite ready.

Sun Sep 2 201218:37Casey Kelly struggles against Rockies
Casey Kelly struggled in a no-decision against the Rockies on Sunday, surrendering seven runs (five earned) on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings of work.
He struck out five and walked two in the game. It wasn't nearly as impressive as his major league debut earlier in the week, but you have to cut him some slack considering he was pitching at Coors Field. All seven runs scored in the third inning, highlighted by two-run homers from Tyler Colvin and Ramon Hernandez. He'll look to get back on track when he takes a 1-0 record and 3.86 ERA into Saturday's home start against the Diamondbacks.

Tue Aug 28 201200:49Casey Kelly beats Braves in MLB debut
Casey Kelly blanked the Braves for six innings Monday to pick up a victory in his major league debut.
Kelly, who was called up from Double-A before the game, allowed just three hits, and the Padres combined on a four-hit shutout. Kelly struck out four and walked two while throwing 87 pitches. He didn't show quite as much velocity tonight as he has at times in the minors, but he combined good stuff with plenty of poise. It looks like he'll be worth using in NL-only leagues.

Mon Aug 27 201217:40Padres recall RHP Casey Kelly from Double-A
Padres recalled RHP Casey Kelly from Double-A San Antonio.
Kelly will make his major league debut Monday night against the Braves. The 22-year-old right-hander missed a large chunk of the season due to a strained right elbow, but he bounced back with a 3.78 ERA and 18/3 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings over three starts at the Double-A level this month. He should have some value in NL-only leagues down the stretch.
