Cecil was ruled out for the rest of the postseason after suffering the injury in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Texas Rangers, but he has been able to throw the last two days, and says that he is pleasantly surprised by the amount of progress he has made in such a short amount of time. “Everything feels good,” Cecil said after Thursday's throwing session. “The biggest thing for me will be running. I haven’t done it yet. I’m going to try and run in the next few days.” Cecil, who finished the regular season with a 2.48 ERA, 70 strikeouts and 13 walks in 54.1 innings, does not have a timetable for return, while the Blue Jays will play the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series.

Cecil has a torn left calf and will miss the remainder of the postseason, SportsNet's Barry Davis reports.

The Jays not only lost Game 2 Friday, pushing them to the brink of elimination, but they lost their best left-handed reliever in the process. All indications are that Cecil will be ready to go for the start of the 2016 season.

Cecil will undergo an MRI on his left calf muscle, Jeff Blair of Sportsnet.ca reports.

The Blue Jays have decided an MRI is necessary to gauge the full extent of the calf issue that knocked Cecil out of Friday's Game 2 of the ALDS. Cecil was spotted icing the calf and being fitted for crutches after exiting. His injury could loom large, as Aaron Loup is only other lefty in the Toronto bullpen.

Cecil left Friday's Game 2 of the ALDS with tightness in his calf and is being evaluated, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.

The left-hander completed a scoreless eighth inning on 12 pitches, but was clearly hobbled as he left the field. Saturday is an off day in the series, but Cecil's availability for Sunday is a question mark. Aaron Loup is the only other lefty reliever on the Blue Jays' ALDS roster.

Cecil (5-5) pitched a scoreless inning and struck out two in a 4-3 victory over the Orioles on Monday.

Cecil has not surrendered an earned run since before the All-Star break, a June 21 outing against the Orioles. He has not allowed a homer since even earlier in the year, with the last gopher ball against him coming on June 10 against the Marlins. The hard-throwing southpaw has multiple strikeouts in seven of his 13 relief appearances in September, and his 11.38 K/9 rate speaks to his ability to mow down opposing batters at a blistering clip. Cecil will undoubtedly serve as a key component of the Toronto's postseason bullpen.

Cecil navigated the end of the seventh inning by striking out a pair, but bungled a ground ball to put on what would end up being the winning runner in the eighth inning. Cecil hasn't given up an earned run since June 21, which has allowed his ERA to drop from 5.96 to 2.77.

Cecil has fallen out of favor since the trade deadline, but the one-time closer for the team is still a serviceable reliever for them. While he probably won't see higher leverage situations again this season with Roberto Osuna, Mark Lowe, Aaron Sanchez and LaTroy Hawkins all seeing opportunities before Cecil.

Cecil got the only batter he faced out in Thursday's victory over the Royals.

Ever since being deposed of the closer's role, Cecil has been excellent. After picking up the loss on June 21, he hasn't given up an earned run in 11 innings while holding a WHIP of 1.00 and striking out 13. Over that span, he's lowered his season ERA from 5.96 to 4.01. While it will be difficult to work back into high-leverage situations this season, more clean innings should increase manager John Gibbons' trust in Cecil.

Since abdicating the closer role, Cecil has pitched pretty well, not giving up an earned run in either of his two appearances after giving up eight in his previous three. Cecil's strikeout totals have been strong all season, but his propensity for putting men on base makes him a risky proposition. Cecil's currently in the position as just another reliever until he regains the trust of the coaching staff means appearances will come with far less regularity.

His command had fallen off as well, walking multiple batters three times this month after walking two batters in all of May. After only allowing one earned run between April 28 and June 10, Cecil has been a wreck of late. In his last six appearances, he's given up earned runs in five of them and watched his ERA nearly double from 3.00 to 5.96. Cecil's grasp on the closer role is quickly slipping through his hands; however, the Blue Jays have no natural replacement as the whole pen has struggled this season.

Cecil notched his fifth save, despite allowing two runs on three hits in the ninth inning of a 5-4 win against Baltimore on Friday night. He struck out one.

After going 39 days without a save opportunity from early May until early June, the chances are starting to come but Cecil has been shaky of late. His ERA has now ballooned to 4.50, and he blew a save and took the loss in his last appearance. If the Jays decide to look at other options, there is no clear candidate. Roberto Osuna pitched well early in the season, but has struggled a bit recently. Steve Delabar might be a consideration, but he has a history of tough times against lefties. A dark horse possibility may be Liam Hendriks who has actually been their most reliable bullpen arm for most of the year.

Cecil allowed a bloop hit to Lucas Duda to score the game-tying run, and then Duda came around to score on a Wilmer Flores single off of Liam Hendricks. The blown save was Cecil's first since being installed as the closer in Toronto.

Finally, the save chances are starting to come Cecil's way, and so far he's been up to the task. He now has a solid 3.10 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB ratio in 20.1 innings on the season.

Cecil has just three saves on the season, but that isn't really his fault as this was the first save opportunity presented by the Blue Jays in 39 days dating back to May 4. He made this one interesting, but he is secure in the closer's gig unless he starts coughing up leads as Toronto eventually provides him with more save chances.

Cecil has been prone to giving up the long ball this season, as three of the four times he's given up earned runs in a game, it's been because of home runs. Cecil's last save came on May 4, though that's of no fault of his own. This was also his first appearance without a strikeout since April 30. He may be a good buy-low candidate as his depressed save totals thus far could scare away current owners.
