Sat Sep 7 201301:34Rex Brothers blows save, takes loss
Rex Brothers took his second blown save and first loss after giving up two runs in the ninth Friday against the Padres.
It was Brothers' first blown save in 16 chances as a closer. The other blown save came in the seventh inning of a game against the Giants back in May. Brothers has definitely been shaky these last few outings, but his job is secure.

Sun Aug 25 201317:05Brothers walks 2 but escapes with 13th save
Rex Brothers walked two in the ninth on Sunday, but escaped the inning unscathed in earning his 13th save of the season against the Marlins.
Brothers struck out two in the inning. The 25-year-old southpaw has strung together five consecutive scoreless appearances and has whiffed at least one batter in nine straight outings. Brothers is 13-for-14 in save conversions and boasts a 1.46 ERA over 59 appearances. With Rafael Betancourt sidelined with a potentially serious elbow injury, Brothers has a good chance to end the season as Colorado's closer.

Rex Brothers picked up his 10th save in Sunday's win over the Pirates.
Brothers allowed two hits and an intentional walk, but was able to get out of a bases loaded jam. It was his second straight shaky outing after giving up a run and two hits in Saturday's win. Brothers still owns a dominant 1.49 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 48 1/3 innings this season.

Fri Aug 2 201322:43Rex Brothers secures eighth save of season
Rex Brothers surrendered a run on two hits against the Pirates on Friday, but still managed to secure his eighth save of the season.
Brothers allowed an RBI double to Pedro Alvarez, but was able to pitch his way around any further damage. He owns an outstanding 1.39 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 46/22 K/BB ratio through 45 1/3 innings on the season. With as well as he's pitched, it seems possible he'll remain in the closer's role for the remainder of the season, even after Rafael Betancourt returns from the DL.

Fri Jun 28 201323:58Brothers converts save Friday vs. Giants
Rex Brothers converted his fifth save of the season Friday against the Giants.
Rafael Betancourt was activated from the disabled list Friday, but apparently Rockies manager Walt Weiss wants to ease him back into the ninth inning. While Brothers notched the save, his 32-outing scoreless streak came to an end on a solo homer by Buster Posey. Still, he has a ridiculous 0.52 ERA and 37/17 K/BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings this season.

Tue Jun 4 201323:03Brothers picks up second save as Rox top Reds
Rex Brothers worked a perfect ninth inning against the Reds to earn his second save of the season on Tuesday.
With Rafael Betancourt on the shelf, Brothers will get the save opportunities in his stead. Through 25 2/3 innings, the left-hander has allowed just one run while striking out 25. He should be owned in all leagues while he continues to get save chances.

Wed May 22 201318:15Rex Brothers records save for Rockies
With Rafael Betancourt sidelined, Rex Brothers earned his first save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
Brothers has allowed just one run in 21 1/3 innings this season, so he was an obvious choice to close in Betancourt's place. Since it currently appears that Betancourt will avoid the DL, Brothers isn't guaranteed additional saves.

Tue May 21 201304:45Brothers hasn't allowed a run since April 6
Rex Brothers hasn't allowed a run since April 6.
And that run, surrendered to the Padres, is the only blemish on his campaign to this point. Brothers has six holds, a 0.47 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 20/7 K/BB ratio over 21 appearances. He's been Colorado's best reliever, but closer Rafael Betancourt is also pitching well for the 24-21 Rockies. Brothers could be Colorado's full-time closer next season, but he likely won't earn saves in 2013 barring injury.

Sat Jun 2 201213:13Rockies recall Brothers
Rockies recalled LHP Rex Brothers from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
He'll provide some much needed left-handed pitching depth. Despite his strikeout potential, Brothers needs to show more consistency to be considered a mainstay in the Rockies' bullpen. He's posted a dominant 3.06 ERA and 1.265 WHIP in parts of four seasons in the minors.

Sun May 20 201213:46Rex Brothers sent down
Rockies optioned LHP Rex Brothers to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Brothers entered the season as a sleeper for saves, but he got off to a woeful start, posting a 5.87 ERA and 2.28 WHIP over 15 1/3 innings. His 21 strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings shows his upside, but he has to throw more strikes if he wants to cash in on his potential.

Thu May 17 201219:22Rex Brothers gives up four runs in relief
Rex Brothers gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning out of the pen Thursday versus the Diamondbacks.
Brothers didn't get a blown save or take the loss, but the Rockies probably would have won today had he done his job. His ERA jumped from 3.95 to 6.28 this one, and his WHIP is a hideous 2.23. Even though he's a strikeout matching, the Rockies might need to send him back to Triple-A for a few weeks to get him straightened out.

Thu Apr 19 201210:07Rex Brothers cruising
Rex Brothers has a 1.59 ERA through 5 2/3 innings.
Brothers is also sporting a cool 5/2 K/BB ratio. The 24-year-old is probably second in line for save opportunities this year in Colorado behind closer Rafael Betancourt.

Wed Aug 24 201105:09Brothers earns first career save
Rex Brothers locked down his first career save on Tuesday, tossing a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the Rockies' 8-6 win.
Rafael Betancourt got the night off after pitching in three straight games. Brothers walked the first batter and served up a single with one out, but retired the last two hitters without incurring damage. The 23-year-old has been moderately reliable in his rookie season, owning a 3.72 ERA and 1.45 WHIP, and just as importantly has earned manager Jim Tracy's confidence.

Sun Jul 24 201110:03Rex Brothers gaining more trust
Rex Brothers has gained the trust of Rockies manager Jim Tracy and will continue to be used in high-leverage situations.
The rookie's last six appearances have come in the eighth inning, and he'll continue to be used to help set up closer Huston Street. Brothers has a 2.55 ERA and has struck out 25 in 17 2/3 innings this season. "I've gained much more confidence in him," Tracy said. "At some point in time, you remove the reins, take them to the trough and see if they're going to drink the water."

Fri Jun 10 201105:07Brothers tosses another scoreless inning
Rex Brothers pitched a perfect inning of relief in the Rockies' victory over the Dodgers on Thursday.
Brothers has been terrific in the week since his call-up, hurling 3 2/3 scoreless innings accompanied by a 4/1 K/BB ratio. He will continue to serve in middle relief and, with the Rockies' potent offense (fifth in NL runs scored), could be in line for a few wins.

Sat Jun 4 201113:19Rex Brothers called up
Rockies purchased the contract of LHP Rex Brothers from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
It was time to give him a shot. Brothers suffers from the occasional lapse in control, as his 15 walks in 28 Triple-A innings can attest, but he's also shown the ability to dominate with a 14.5 K/9 mark. He'll likely be eased into meaningful innings, but the 2009 first-round pick has the potential to be an instant-impact member of the bullpen.

Sat Jun 4 201111:17Rex Brothers could be called up
Rex Brothers could be promoted by the Rockies soon.
The Rockies have flirted with calling up the big left-hander up for a few weeks now, but they might finally be ready to make the move. Brothers has been simply dominant at Triple-A Colorado Springs, posting a 14.5 K/9 rate over 28 innings. He's walked too many (15), but the Rox would love to add his dynamic arm to the bullpen. Matt Daley and Greg Reynolds are likely candidate for a demotion if Brothers is called upon.
