Wed Jul 10 201301:22Eric Stults goes distance for seventh win
Eric Stults pitched his second career complete game in the Padres' 2-1 victory over the Rockies on Thursday.
Stults notched his first complete game in his 52nd career start on June 14. The second comes just five outings later. He threw 122 pitches and allowed just four hits in this one. Stults had struggled in consecutive starts coming into the night, but both of them were on the road. The win at Petco moves him to 4-1 with a 2.56 ERA at home this year. He's 3-6 with a 4.31 ERA on the road.

Thu Jul 4 201317:22Eric Stults gives up four runs in loss
Eric Stults surrendered four runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Red Sox.
Stults has struggled in back-to-back outings, taking his ERA from 3.20 to 3.70. Of course, mixed leaguers shouldn't have been using him today anyway, not with him pitching at Fenway Park. He's 3-1 with a 2.85 ERA at Petco this year, compared to 3-6 with a 4.31 ERA elsewhere.

Sat Jun 29 201321:41Stults allows six runs in Padres' loss to MIA
Eric Stults allowed six runs -- five earned -- over 3 2/3 innings Saturday in the Padres' loss to the Marlins.
Stults had been on a roll for a month-plus, but it all fell apart for him on Saturday night against an unimposing Marlins lineup. He yielded seven hits and issued two walks, and was lifted after throwing only 75 pitches. The right-hander will face the Red Sox in Boston next.

Tue Jun 25 201302:06Stults hurls seven innings of two-run ball
Eric Stults hurled seven innings of two-run ball in a no-decision Monday against the Phillies.
Stults was on the hook for a loss before San Diego rallied in the ninth inning. He gave up seven hits and no walks, striking out four. Since going 2-2 with a 5.67 ERA in April, Stults has been nothing less than one of the league's best starters. He posted a 2.66 ERA in May and has allowed two runs or less in all five of his June starts. The southpaw doesn't have much in the way of raw stuff, but he's worth trotting out in mixed leagues until the clock strikes midnight, whenever that might be.

Sat Jun 15 201300:42Eric Stults throws two-hitter to beat Arizona
Eric Stults pitched a two-hitter for his third career complete game as the Padres edged the Diamondbacks 2-1 on Friday.
Gerardo Parra double to start the top of the first and came around to score on a sac fly. After that, Stults gave up just one more hit the rest of the way and recorded his first complete game since a shutout in 2009. In his last four starts, Stults has given up five earned runs and just one walk in 31 innings. He's certainly not this good, but he's a decent play in mixed leagues with the Giants, Phillies and Marlins next on the schedule.

Tue Jun 4 201300:50Eric Stults looks good against former team
Eric Stults pitched well against his former team Monday despite taking a loss, yielding just two runs over seven frames against the Dodgers.
Stults allowed six hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out three, but he was undone by a pair of longballs, as Adrian Gonzalez and Scott Van Slyke both got to him. The southpaw has underwhelming stuff but continues to give the Padres solid work, putting up a 3.74 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Fantasy owners should avoid him at Coors this weekend.

Thu May 30 201301:38Eric Stults strikes out 12 against Mariners
Eric Stults struck out a career-high 12 while pitching eight innings of one-run ball against the Mariners on Wednesday.
The 12 strikeouts was so out of character for Stults that you have to go back to 2007 to find the last time he amassed that many between any two consecutive starts. He fanned seven batters in his first start of this year, but his next high total was five and he struck out just two in 6 1/3 innings last time out. In other words, don't expect much more of this from Stults. He's just a spot starter in NL-only leagues.

Sun May 19 201301:38Stults continues solid start, beats the Nats
Eric Stults held the Nationals to one run over eight innings to pick up a win Saturday and move to 4-3 on the season.
Stults has been great over his last four starts, lowering his ERA from 5.67 to 4.05. On Saturday, he struck out five, walked two and scattered four hits. Stults gets the Diamondbacks on Friday night.

Wed May 8 201301:27Eric Stults defeats Marlins
Eric Stults held the Marlins to one run in 6 1/3 innings to pick up a win Tuesday and move to 3-2 on the season.
Stults, also effective against the Cubs last time out, has taken advantage of an easy schedule to lower his ERA from 5.67 to 4.50 in his last two starts. He's playable in NL-only leagues when the Padres are at home, but that's about all he'll be useful for.

Sun Apr 28 201301:20Eric Stults gets lifted after four
Eric Stults lasted only four innings and gave up five runs Saturday in a no-decision against the Giants.
Stults was handed a rotation spot this spring based on his strong showing in 14 starts last year, but he's more of a middle reliever/swingman on a contending team. The Padres aren't likely to replace him right away, but one more bad outing could do it.

Sun Apr 21 201319:49Stults allows five runs in loss to Giants
Eric Stults gave up five runs on eight hits over seven innings in a loss Sunday against the Giants.
Stults had been serviceable to this point, but these are the type of games you have to expect from him. He had just two strikeouts and allowed a two-run homer to Buster Posey. Stults is no more than an NL-only option.

Tue Apr 16 201301:51Stults solid on mound, at plate
Eric Stults limited the Dodgers to three runs on nine hits and a walk over six frames in Monday's 6-3 win.
He struck out four on the night and needed 99 pitches to cover the six innings. Stults mostly did a good job of damage control on the mound, but it was at the plate where he really came up big, delivering a two-out, three-run homer in the second inning off of Chad Billingsley. The soft-tossing left-hander will take on the Giants next.

Thu Apr 4 201316:34Stults strikes out seven in win over Mets
Eric Stults tossed five shutout frames in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Mets.
Stults gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out a career-high seven. The southpaw only averaged 5.0 K/9 last season, so we wouldn't look for that to continue in future outings, but he remains a decent option in NL-only leagues for the time being.

Fri Mar 29 201323:05Stults goes four innings Friday vs. Rangers
Eric Stults yielded two runs (one earned) over four innings in Friday's start against the Rangers.
Coming off a 2.91 ERA last in 2012, Stults will begin the season in the Padres' starting rotation, but we have serious doubts about his ability to stick there. The southpaw is set to start the third game of the season against the Mets next week, which isn't the worst matchup, but he's unlikely to be relevant outside of NL-only fantasy leagues.

Tue Mar 19 201318:45Stults goes six strong, Padres beat Snakes
Eric Stults held the Diamondbacks to two earned runs over six innings Tuesday in a 6-2 victory.
Stults walked one and struck out two. The 33-year-old lefty has an ugly 6.92 ERA in 13 innings this spring, but he is still expected to open the season in the Padres' starting rotation. Stults posted a 2.91 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 15 starts and five relief appearances last season.

Mon Mar 4 201318:36Eric Stults likely has rotation spot
Padres manager Bud Black indicated Monday that Eric Stults is locked into a rotation spot.
He probably deserves it after posting a 2.92 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 18 games -- 14 starts -- for the Pads last season. The lefty could have some NL-only value this season. Stults will be joined in the rotation by Edinson Volquez, Clayton Richard and Jason Marquis, and Andrew Casher (thumb) will also have a spot if he's healthy. A host of pitchers will compete for the No. 5 spot if Cashner starts the year on the DL.

Sun Sep 30 201201:15Eric Stults finishes 2012 on high note
Making his final start of the season, Eric Stults held the Giants to three runs on six hits and three walks in six innings of Saturday's 7-3 win.
Stults struck out five in improving to 8-3. His only real mistake came in the first, where he served up a three-run homer to Hunter Pence. The quality start was his third straight, and sixth in seven outings. The impending free agent finishes 2012 the owner of a 2.92 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 55/27 K/BB ratio through 99 innings.

Wed Sep 19 201200:11Stults has quality start in loss to D'Backs
Eric Stults turned in a quality start in Tuesday's loss to the Diamondbacks, surrendering three runs on five hits over six innings of work.
He struck out six on the night. Miguel Montero was responsible for most of the damage, smacking a pair of RBI doubles. Stults has done a very nice job since rejoining the Padres rotation on August 6, posting a 5-1 record, 2.37 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over eight starts. He'll look to keep the ball rolling when he takes on the Dodgers at home on Wednesday.
