Tue Mar 29 202219:04Zac Gallen To Make Spring Debut Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (shoulder) will make his Cactus League debut against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Gallen has been dealing with right shoulder bursitis in the offseason, and he was behind the other pitchers in camp as a result. The 26-year-old right-hander has been throwing off a mound for weeks, though, so he's not very far behind. With that said, he is unlikely to have a full workload early in the season if he's on the Opening Day roster and doesn't suffer any setbacks to close out spring training. In 23 starts covering 121 2/3 innings last year, Gallen had a 4.30 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 139 strikeouts and 49 strikeouts for the Snakes.

Sat Mar 26 202221:38Zac Gallen Unlikely To Be Ready For Opening Day
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen (shoulder) is "unlikely to be ready to take the ball in the second game of the season," writes Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Hindered by a shoulder injury, Gallen threw a two-inning simulated game on Friday and should take the mound in a spring training contest soon. However, Arizona doesn't want to rush him back, hence the idea that he'll open the regular season on the shelf. The former top prospect finished 2021 with a 4.30 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, .231 xBA and 1.39 WHIP through 23 starts last season.

Mon Mar 21 202214:17Zac Gallen Dealing With Bursitis
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (shoulder) had some stiffness in his shoulder in December, and an MRI exam showed bursitis. He threw his second bullpen session of camp on March 18 and said he had no issues with his right shoulder. The next step is for Gallen to face live hitters in a batting practice session, but he's currently behind the other pitchers in camp, and there's some question if he'll be ready for Opening Day. If he's not ready, he should be ready shortly after the season starts. The 26-year-old shouldn't lose any fantasy value because of the issue, at least not yet. Gallen went 4-10 in 2021 with a 4.30 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while fanning 139 hitters and walking 49 in 23 starts covering 121 1/3 innings.

Mon Mar 14 202222:44Zac Gallen Dealing With Shoulder Issues
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (shoulder) is uncertain for Opening Day. He is currently behind at camp, but will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. Gallen is currently dealing with a case of shoulder bursitis this offseason. This is an issue that could force Gallen to miss time at the start of the season. This is a shame for a pitcher that continues to deal with injuries. Gallen has looked good when healthy, but keeping him on the field has been tricky.

Wed Sep 1 202112:21Zac Gallen Throws Quality Start In Loss
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen threw a quality start against the San Diego Padres Tuesday night, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out four batters. Unfortunately, there was little run (or hit) support for him against Blake Snell, and he took the loss, dropping his record for the season to 2-8. Gallen has not performed up to expectations this year, with a 4.34 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and 106 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings, but he's shown promise in his last three starts, allowing just three earned runs total across 18 innings. There's plenty of fantasy upside for him the rest of the way.

Sun Aug 22 202114:04Zac Gallen Tosses Seven Scoreless Innings Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen threw seven scoreless innings on Saturday, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out nine in a 5-2 loss to the Rockies. It was Gallen's best outing since April, as he had gone 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA, 1.537 WHIP and 25.6 percent strikeout rate over his last five starts entering Saturday. It's been a disappointing year for Gallen overall between injury and underperformance, as he's now 1-7 with a 4.59 ERA, 1.332 WHIP and 27.4 percent strikeout rate. He'll have a tougher matchup in his next outing against Philadelphia.

Fri Aug 20 202108:33Zac Gallen Continuing To Struggle In August
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen has had a year to forget in 2021. He started off the season pitching relatively well, but things have gotten progressively worse for him each month. Through three starts in August, he's posted a 6.48 ERA, giving up 19 hits and seven walks over 16.2 innings. The 26-year-old has a 5.03 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP on the year. He has a decent 26.7% strikeout rate, but he's struggled with walks (10.4% walk rate) and he's given up a lot of hard contact (42% hard-hit rate). His 3.98 xERA suggests he's been unlucky so far, but he's still too tough to trust as a fantasy starter for now. He'll make his next start against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

Thu Aug 5 202112:52Zac Gallen Earns Sixth Loss Of Season Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen dropped to 1-6 on the season after taking the loss on Wednesday night. He allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six over 5 2/3 innings of work against the Giants. Gallen has had several stints on the injured list this season, and since he returned from his most recent stay on the IL, Gallen has gone 0-2 with a 5.48 ERA, 1.266 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings of work. To say it's been a disappointing season for Gallen is an understatement, and it's hard to say that he's even worth starting when he gets a favorable matchup due to how inconsistent he's been on the mound. Managers may want to skip his next few starts until he starts putting up more consistent results.

Sat Jul 31 202119:58Zac Gallen Strikes Out Eight Against Dodgers Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen allowed two runs on five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over six innings in a 6-5 win over the Dodgers. While Gallen did not factor into the decision, it was still a good bounce-back performance after allowing seven runs over four innings of work against the Cubs his last time out. It's been a rough year overall for Gallen, who has dealt with injuries that have limited him to just 12 starts, in which he has gone 1-5 with a 4.61 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 27.5 percent strikeout rate over 56 2/3 innings of work. Hopefully this will be the start of a turnaround for Gallen, as he'll look to keep things rolling in his next outing against the Giants.

New York has eight starters on the injured list, including ace Jacob deGrom. Alonso continued his post-Home Run Derby surge, hitting a two-run shot off former teammate Steven Matz (8-5) in the first inning and adding a solo blast off Ryan Borucki in the eighth. Sat Jul 3 202103:07Betts keys Dodgers' 9-run rally in win over Nationals
WASHINGTON (AP) — Mookie Betts hit a go-ahead single during a nine-run rally in the seventh inning after Washington ace Max Scherzer departed, and the Los Angeles Dodgers surged past the Nationals 10-5 Friday night for their seventh straight win. The Nationals lost slugger Kyle Schwarber in the second inning when he grabbed at his hamstring after a single. He hit a franchise-record 16 home runs in June. Julio Urías (10-3) allowed one earned run in six innings. Scherzer also allowed one earned run in six innings and struck out eight. Left-handed reliever Sam Clay (0-1) found trouble when he replaced Scherzer. Chris Taylor hit a leadoff double, a dribbler by pinch-hitter Albert Pujols scored him, and Austin Barnes was hit by a pitch. ANGELS 8, ORIOLES 7 ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani went deep twice to reach 30 homers this season and then scored the winning run on Jared Walsh’s two-out single in the ninth inning that lifted Los Angeles over Baltimore. Wed Jun 23 202101:49Scherzer passes checks, Nationals stare down Phillies 3-2
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Max Scherzer threw his glove and hat to the grass, then stared down Phillies manager Joe Girardi after getting checked for a third time by umpires for sticky stuff as the Washington Nationals beat Philadelphia 3-2 Tuesday night. Scherzer (6-4) looked sharp in his return to the rotation after missing a start due to a groin injury, striking out eight in five innings. Girardi apparently didn’t like what he saw. In the fourth, Scherzer threw high and inside to Alec Bohm, sending him sprawling to the ground before striking him out. Prior to the next batter, Girardi asked the umpires to check Scherzer. Scherzer already had been checked by second-base umpire Alfonso Marquez after the first and third inning. So, when he was approached for a third time, this time at Girardi’s request, Scherzer threw his glove and hat to the ground, unbuckled his belt and appeared ready to take his pants off. Yan Gomes had a pair of RBI singles for the Nationals, who have won three straight and... [More]
Fri Jun 18 202102:18D'backs fall again for MLB record 23rd straight road loss
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks set a major league record with their 23rd straight road loss, making dubious history in getting trounced by the San Francisco Giants 10-3 Thursday. The dejected D-backs trudged off the field after breaking a tie with the 1963 Mets and ’43 Philadelphia Athletics for road futility. Held to just a lone single by pitcher Zac Gallen through six innings, Arizona fell behind 6-0. The Diamondbacks don’t play again on the road until June 25 at San Diego. Gallen (1-2) allowed four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings in his first start back from a sprained pitching elbow. Giants starter Kevin Gausman (8-1) limited the D-backs to two runs on four hits in eight innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked one. Curt Casali homered and drove in four runs for San Francisco, finishing a double shy of the cycle. Steven Duggar went 3 for 3 with an RBI double and Mauricio Dubón and Mike Yastrzemski drove in two runs each as the Giants improved the best record in... [More]
