CLEVELAND (AP) — There's a valid reason for Domingo Germán's recent struggles. The New York Yankees placed the right-hander on the injured list with a left hip flexor, an injury that has bothered him for a few weeks but he didn't disclose to the team until Saturday.Germán has an 8.59 ERA in his past three starts, a span in which he has given up seven homers in 14 2/3 innings. He was touched for two homers, including a two-run, tiebreaker by Carlos Santana in the sixth inning Friday in a 5-2 loss that denied Germán his 10th win."The first I heard of it was yesterday after he got done playing catch here," said manager Aaron Bone, adding Germán said he initially felt discomfort during a start in Kansas City on May 26.In that game, Germán gave up seven runs and nine hits in five innings — his worst start by far this season.Boone said he wasn't mad at Germán for keeping his injury private."It's hard to know what level of discomfort he's in," Boone said. "We always want our players to treat any... [More]

Sat Apr 13 201900:24Yanks' Betances out 6-7 more weeks, Sanchez to 10-day IL
NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees' stunning injury list grew again Friday, and things are only getting worse for a few of the players already on it.General manager Brian Cashman said right-handed reliever Dellin Betances will get a cortisone shot in his right shoulder Saturday, which will keep him out another 6 to 7 weeks. That came hours catcher Gary Sánchez became the 12th New York player added to the IL with a strained left calf.Betances opened the season on the IL after dealing with inflammation in his shoulder during spring training. Cashman said after a rain-shortened 9-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox that oral anti-inflammatories did not solve the issue, a determination made after Betances struggled through a simulated game Thursday.Betances had an MRI on Friday that showed inflammation centered around a bone spur in the back of his shoulder. Cashman said the Yankees have been aware of the spur since drafting the 6-foot-8 pitcher in 2006, but it hadn't caused him discomfort until this... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Austin Romine never expected to replace Aroldis Chapman as the Yankees' closer.A backup catcher, Romine was leaning on the dugout railing and watching New York get blown out by Boston in Game 3 of the AL Division Series when bench coach Josh Bard walked up to him in the eighth inning."Can you throw?" Romine recalled Bard asking."I can try," the seven-year big league veteran replied.Romine became just the second position player to pitch in postseason history.
