Shaun Marcum's agent, Rex Gary, told MLB Trade Rumors that his client is doing well in his recovery from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and expects to be ready for spring training.
Marcum required season-ending surgery in July, but he's expected to be on his normal offseason throwing program. After posting a 5.29 ERA and 60/21 K/BB ratio over 78 1/3 inning with the Mets this season, he may have to accept an incentive-laden deal. He turns 32 in December.

Marcum will have surgery on Monday to repair an artery blockage that was causing numbness in his pitching hand. He could resume throwing again in two months, but his season is over. The veteran right-hander will be a free agent this offseason.

The news was first reported by WFAN's Ed Coleman and has been confirmed by Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. An exact diagnosis isn't known yet, but Marcum had been feeling numbness in his pitching hand the last couple starts. It sounds like he might have thoracic outlet syndrome, but we should know for sure shortly. The righty will be a free agent this winter.

Shaun Marcum was knocked around again in the Mets' loss on Saturday night to the Brewers, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits over five innings.
The Brewers scored in each of the first four frames before Marcum finally worked a clean fifth. He now sits at 1-10 on the season with a horrendous 5.29 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. It's uncertain how much longer the Mets will settle for this type of poor performance. Provided he does remain in the rotation for another turn, Marcum will finish up his first half against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Marcum underwent an MRI earlier this week on his sore upper back and it showed no major structural damage. The right-hander has a 5.03 ERA in 73 1/3 innings this season and needs to be avoided in fantasy leagues no matter how healthy the Mets claim him to be.

Shaun Marcum went eight scoreless innings to get his first win of the season, as the Mets blanked the White Sox 3-0 on Wednesday.
Marcum had previously been 0-9 in nine starts this year heading into the game, but the right-hander took matters into his own hands on Wednesday. Marcum allowed just four hits and two walks in his eight innings of work, striking out two. He'll try to make it two in a row against the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Shaun Marcum fell to 0-9 as he allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Braves on Wednesday.
Marcum hasn't been as awful as his record would indicate, but he's now turned in two subpar starts in a row that have seen his ERA balloon from 4.96 to 5.76. Marcum's control failed him on Wednesday, as he walked a season-high four batters to go along with six hits allowed. At this point, it's not hard to see Marcum being the odd man out when Zack Wheeler arrives in New York for good.

Mets manager Terry Collins suggested Friday that Shaun Marcum's rotation spot could be in jeopardy.
"When it comes down to the time to make the decision, certainly I'm not sure salary is going to have anything to do with it," Collins said. "I think we're going to take the five guys that we need to make sure are the best to go out there." The Mets will likely move one of Marcum, Jeremy Hefner or Dillon Gee to the bullpen when Zack Wheeler is promoted on Tuesday.

Marcum gave up five runs over the first two innings before settling down, but he simply dug himself too big of a hole. The veteran right-hander struck out four and walked one in the loss and now stands at 0-8 with a 5.43 ERA on the year. He'll try again for first his first win next week against the Braves.

Shaun Marcum allowed three runs -- two earned -- over 6 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Cardinals.
It was Marcum's best start of the season by far, though he wound up taking the loss. He scattered four singles and a double while issuing only one walk and striking out three. The right-hander will carry an 0-4 record, 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP into his next start against the Reds.

Fri May 10 201322:37X-rays negative on Shaun Marcum's thumb
Mets manager Terry Collins indicated Friday that X-rays came back negative on Shaun Marcum's thumb.
There was no word of any injury during the game, but Collins indicated that he was shocked Marcum's thumb wasn't broken. He's struggled through his first three starts of the season, but the most important thing is that he's healthy. He's best left on benches in fantasy leagues until he starts displaying some progress however.
