Rick Ankiel (quad) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Double-A Harrisburg.
Ankiel hit the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a quad injury, but the move was made retroactive to March 28 and he's expected to be activated for the Nationals' home opener on April 12. The 32-year-old will serve as Washington's starting center fielder this season.

Mon Apr 2 201212:41Ankiel to open season on disabled list
Rick Ankiel will be placed on the disabled list before Opening Day because of a quad injury.
Michael Morse is also going to open the year on the 15-day DL. But the Nationals are hoping that both players will be ready in time for their home opener (on April 12).

Fri Mar 30 201215:44Rick Ankiel added to roster
Nationals purchased the contract of OF Rick Ankiel from Triple-A Syracuse.
Ankiel was always going to make the team and has now officially been added to the roster. He might need a DL stint to start the season, though, as he can't seem to get over a nagging quad injury.

Fri Mar 30 201215:30Rick Ankiel might not be ready for opener
Nationals manager Davey Johnson admitted to being "a little concerned" about whether Rick Ankiel (quad) will be ready in time for Opening Day.
The Nats have been downplaying Ankiel's sore left quad all along, but it appears now that they're ready to admit it's a concern. On the bright side, he did have his contract officially purchased and was added to the 40-man roster. If Ankiel needs a trip to the disabled list, Roger Bernadina would handle center field.

Tue Mar 27 201215:58Ankiel out Tuesday due to quad soreness
Rick Ankiel exited Tuesday's game with quad soreness.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson called it a "precautionary" measure. Ankiel has battled quad issues all spring, but it's not a major concern and he's expected to be fine for the start of the regular season.

Tue Mar 20 201211:53Ankiel (quad) back in Nationals' lineup
Rick Ankiel (quad) is back in the Nationals' Grapefruit League lineup on Tuesday afternoon.
Ankiel missed about a week due to tightness in his left quad. But it was never a major concern in Nationals camp, and the 32-year-old should be back to 100 percent health by Opening Day. He's likely to serve as Washington's primary center fielder this year.

Sun Mar 18 201217:55Ankiel leading CF candidate for Nationals
The Nationals are leaning toward Rick Ankiel as their Opening Day center fielder in favor of Roger Bernadina and Brett Carroll, according to ESPN's Jim Bowden.
Ankiel and Bernadina could end up in a time share, however, Bowden concedes. Washington has apparently abandoned plans to play Jayson Werth in center and have ordained Bryce Harper as the position's future. Whoever wins this job coming out of camp won't have early-season value outside of NL-only leagues.

Sun Mar 18 201210:24Rick Ankiel to return Tuesday
Rick Ankiel (quad) is expected to return to game action Tuesday.
Ankiel has been dealing with tightness in his left quad since the beginning of last week. He appears to be nearly over the ailment, though, and ready to get back in the swing of things. Ankiel is trying to win the starting job in center field.

Sat Mar 17 201212:26Rick Ankiel dealing with quad injury
Rick Ankiel clarified that an injury to his left quad -- not his hamstring -- has been keeping him out.
The injury was never considered serious and only became an issue when running. Ankiel has a home run, triple, and a walk in seven Grapefruit League plate appearances.

Rick Ankiel was held out of the Nationals' lineup Tuesday because of tightness in his left hamstring tightness.
Ankiel is aiming to return to action on Thursday or Friday. The 32-year-old outfielder has a home run, a triple and a walk in seven Grapefruit League plate appearances.

Mon Mar 5 201221:25Rick Ankiel homers in win over Mets
Rick Ankiel homered and walked in Monday's 3-1 win over the Mets.
Ankiel slugged a solo shot off Dillon Gee in the second and worked out a walk against prospect right-hander Matt Harvey in the fourth. The non-roster invitee will likely end up on the Opening Day roster if the Nats go the conservative route and put Bryce Harper in the minors to begin the season.

Sun Feb 5 201218:53Nationals sign OF Ankiel to minor league deal
Nationals signed OF Rick Ankiel to a minor league contract.
The deal comes with an invitation to Spring Training. Best case scenario for Ankiel is that he wins a platoon job in camp with Mike Cameron in center, which would knock Roger Bernadina to the bench and possibly off the roster. Worst case is that Washington moves Jayson Werth to center or trades a starting pitcher for another outfielder and Ankiel isn't able to crack the roster. We like his odds, but he won't be fantasy relevant outside of deep NL-only leagues. The 32-year-old batted .239/.296/.363 with nine home runs, 37 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a .659 OPS over 415 plate appearances with Washington last season.

Sun Feb 5 201217:34Nationals re-sign Ankiel to minor league deal
The Nationals have re-signed Rick Ankiel to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, reports Amanda Comak of the Washington Times.
Ankiel batted .239/.296/.363 with nine home runs and 37 RBI over 415 plate appearances last season, but didn't receive much interest on the open market and will now fight for a reserve role in Washington. Unless Washington deals from its surplus of starting pitching to acquire an additional outfielder, Ankiel figures to have a good chance of landing a spot on the big league roster.

Thu Feb 2 201209:06Mets still interested in adding lefty OF bat
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Mets are still interested in acquiring a left-handed hitting outfielder.
Heyman doesn't mention any specific names, but Rick Ankiel, Raul Ibanez, Johnny Damon and Kosuke Fukudome are likely on their list. While the Mets don't have a ton of money to spend, they could end up with a pretty good bargain now that spring training is right around the corner.

Thu Jan 26 201212:54Mets monitoring market for lefty hitting OFs
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Mets are "diligently monitoring" the market for left-handed hitting outfielders.
Crasnick names Rick Ankiel, Johnny Damon, Kosuke Fukudome, Raul Ibanez and Juan Pierre in his report, although it's not clear if they are actually talking to those specific players. For what it's worth, the Mets have at least been linked to Ankiel in the past. There's a surplus among free agent hitters right now, so with spring training rapidly approaching, there's a good chance the Mets will get someone at a bargain rate.

Sat Jan 7 201213:57Nationals still open to re-signing Ankiel
According to the Washington Times, the Nationals have not ruled out bringing back free agent Rick Ankiel.
Ankiel batted .239/.296/.363 with nine home runs and 37 RBI over 415 plate appearances this past season, but hasn't received much interest on the open market. The 32-year-old will likely have to accept less money and a diminished role in order to return in 2012.

Thu Dec 8 201108:52Nats interested in re-signing Rick Ankiel
MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that the Nationals have interest in re-signing Rick Ankiel.
The Nationals haven't made any progress in their search for a center fielder, so a return for Ankiel at least remains a possibility. The 32-year-old batted .239/.296/.363 with nine home runs, 37 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a .659 OPS over 415 plate appearances with Washington this past season.

Fri Nov 4 201109:12Mets could pursue Rick Ankiel
Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets could target Rick Ankiel for their center field job.
That's assuming they wind up trading or non-tendering Angel Pagan, which is expected. Ankiel batted just .239/.296/.363 for the Nationals this season but did rate very well in defensive metrics and, of course, has a cannon for an arm. Martino says the Mets are looking to trim their payroll by $30 million, and they'd probably save about $4 million going from Pagan to Ankiel.

Mon Sep 26 201120:51Ankiel hopes to return to Nats in 2012
Rick Ankiel said Monday that he hopes to return to the Nationals next season.
"I would like to comeback. It was a lot of fun," said Ankiel. "I think more than anything, as a player who has been around, you want to win and this organization is definitely going in that direction. Looking at what they have coming and what this team can be, it would be a lot of fun." Ankiel, 32, entered Monday's action with an underwhelming .243/.300/.369 batting line to go along with nine homers, 35 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a .670 OPS over 406 plate appearances this season. The Nationals are expected to be on the hunt for a center fielder and leadoff man, so the veteran outfielder will likely have to accept less money and a diminished role in order to return in 2012.

Mon Aug 29 201104:16Ankiel grabs three hits in extra-inning loss
Rick Ankiel went 3-for-7 on Sunday in a 14-inning loss to the Reds.
He sure needed that one. Ankiel had gone hitless with 11 strikeouts in five of his previous six starts. He added a run and an RBI on Sunday, and is now batting .240/.300/.357.
