Fri Feb 13 201511:09Joe Blanton: Comes Out Of Retirement, Signs With Royals
Blanton has come out of retirement and signed a minor league deal with the Royals, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
That was a short retirement. Blanton will almost definitely open the season in Triple-A, considering he would have to beat out Edinson Volquez and Kris Medlen for the fifth starter spot despite not pitching for an entire year. Blanton was also awful in 2013, pitching a 6.04 ERA and 1.613 WHIP. Him returning to the majors would be a cool story, but it's not happening barring a slew of injuries to the Royals' rotation.
Thu Apr 17 201416:13Blanton hasn't officially retired
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Joe Blanton has not officially retired.
Blanton left the Athletics' Triple-A team after two outings, but he hasn't decided whether he'll give up baseball for good. Regardless, the Angels will pay him the $9.5 million remaining on his contract. The 33-year-old owns an 85-89 record and 4.51 ERA in the majors.

Mon Mar 31 201414:56A's sign Joe Blanton to minor league contract
Athletics signed RHP Joe Blanton to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento.
Blanton, a first-round pick of the A's in 2002, was released by the Angels at the end of spring camp after allowing 22 hits and 16 earned runs in 20 1/3 innings. He's doubtful to make a positive impact for Oakland.

Wed Mar 26 201412:29Angels release right-hander Joe Blanton
Angels released RHP Joe Blanton.
Blanton did little to make a case for a rotation spot, so it was just a matter of whether the Angels were willing to eat his remaining salary to let him go. Ultimately, they were. The Angels will absorb his $7.5 million salary for this season and a $1 million buyout on his 2015 option to cut him loose. He'll surely get an opportunity elsewhere now that he can be had at the major league minimum, but we're not expecting much.

Joe Blanton allowed four runs, walking four, over 4 1/3 innings against the Brewers on Saturday.
Blanton gave up a leadoff home run to Carlos Gomez, and things didn't get much better from there. He finished allowing six hits and four walks while striking out three. In his bid to make the Angels' rotation, the right-hander now has a 7.08 ERA this spring.

Mon Mar 17 201418:26Blanton has mixed results against the Cubs
Joe Blanton had mixed results against the Cubs in Monday's start, surrendering three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Blanton only allowed four hits and walked two while striking out one. The right-hander changed his delivery prior to his start on Wednesday, but it may not be enough to slide into the back of the Angels' rotation.

Wed Mar 12 201418:16Blanton has a solid outing against Rangers
Joe Blanton pitched well in Wednesday's start against the Rangers, holding them scoreless over five innings.
Blanton allowed only one hit and struck out five. It's a remarkable improvement over his previous two Cactus League appearances in which he allowed nine runs in 5 2/3 innings. Blanton is still fighting for a spot at the back of the Angels' rotation but his chances aren't great. The Angels could still trade or release him by the end of spring training.

Fri Mar 7 201419:03Joe Blanton hammered in loss to Rockies
Joe Blanton was hammered in a losing effort to the Rockies in Cactus League action on Friday, surrendering seven runs on eight hits in his 3 1/3 innings of work.
The veteran right-hander walked one and struck out two on the afternoon. He served up four longballs in the game, including a pair to Troy Tulowitzki. With a strong showing this spring he could have made a push to crack the Angels Opening Day roster as a long reliever, but those chances are getting slimmer by the day.

Fri Feb 28 201410:37Angels could trade or release Joe Blanton
Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Angels could trade or release Joe Blanton.
Barring injury, there's no spot for Blanton in the team's rotation, and manager Mike Scioscia has indicated that he might not carry a long reliever. "You'd love to have a guy with length," he said. "We're looking for guys that are going to hold leads and help us win games. If we have really good arms that are getting guys out and don't have much length, I don't think that will keep them from our pen." Blanton is owed $7.5 million this season and has a $1 million buyout on his 2015 option. The Angels would have to eat nearly all of that in order to make a trade happen.

Tue Feb 18 201413:16Blanton will have to earn a rotation spot
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Monday that Joe Blanton will have to earn a rotation spot.
Blanton's chances have improved slightly in the wake of Mark Mulder's torn Achilles' tendon, but he's no sure thing after going 2-14 with a 6.04 ERA last year. "Joe needs to make adjustments and put his best foot forward," said Scioscia. "He had a terrible season, but when he's throwing to the best of his ability he's capable of getting major league hitters out." Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs, who were acquired in the three-team Mark Trumbo deal, are the current favorites for the final two spots in the rotation. Blanton is still owed $8.5 million this season.

Wed Jul 24 201320:45Richards replacing Blanton in Angels rotation
The Angels have removed Joe Blanton from their rotation and will replace him with Garrett Richards.
Blanton's abbreviated (3 2/3 innings) outing Monday was the straw that broke the camel's back. After signing a two-year, $15 million deal over the offseason, the right-hander has gone 2-13 while posting a 5.66 ERA over 20 starts. Richards will make a start on Saturday in Oakland.

Tue Jul 23 201323:22Joe Blanton could be bumped from rotation
Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated Tuesday that Joe Blanton is likely to be removed from the rotation.
Blanton lasted just 3 2/3 innings Monday and is now 2-13 with a 5.66 ERA this season. "We're working on a couple things now," Scioscia said. "We're going to see where we are and we'll have a decision. Joe has put every effort into trying to be the pitcher he can be. Right now, it's very clear he is struggling with some of the basic things he needs to do to be that pitcher." The problem for the Angels is that they don't have any good alternatives. Billy Buckner would likely start Saturday if Blanton doesn't get the ball. Garrett Richards and Michael Roth are other more longer-term options, but Richards needs to be stretched out and Roth was just sent down.

Tue Jul 23 201301:52Joe Blanton takes 13th loss
Joe Blanton dropped to 2-13 after allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings Monday against the Twins.
It's time to start the 20-loss watch for Blanton. He's dropped three in a row after a very solid June. If he hadn't been so effective last month, perhaps the Angels would be ready to replace him. As is, they'll probably stick with him for at least a little longer.

Fri Jul 5 201300:18Blanton takes no-decision against Cardinals
Joe Blanton was tagged for five runs (four earned) over 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.
It wasn't a good outing on paper, but he didn't get much help from his defense, either. Blanton allowed nine hits (including a three-run homer by Allen Craig) while walking one and striking out seven. He's the first Angels' pitcher to strike out six batters or more in six straight starts since Jered Weaver did it back in 2010. The veteran right-hander lines up for a start against the Cubs next week in Chicago.

Sat Jun 29 201319:24Blanton goes seven strong, Angels win again
Joe Blanton limited the Astros to two runs over seven innings Saturday in the Angels' 7-2 win.
Houston has been a nice reset button this season for teams in need of a quick jolt. Blanton allowed just three hits and struck out six. Anaheim is now 5-0 on its current road trip and can go 6-0 with a win Sunday.

Sun Jun 23 201320:44Blanton throws another quality start
Joe Blanton held the Pirates to just one earned run on six hits and over 7 1/3 innings Sunday.
Blanton would have been in line for his second win of the season if not for a blown save by Ernesto Frieri. He was forced to settle for a no-decision and ranks behind only Cole Hamels with 10 losses. Blanton surprisingly has eight quality starts, but is posting just a 5.36 ERA and 1.53 WHIP.

Wed Jun 19 201301:57Joe Blanton strikes out 11 Mariners
After having his last start skipped, Joe Blanton allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out 11 against the Mariners on Tuesday.
That's a nice Quality Start for Blanton, but he still gave up two more homers (Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak went back-to-back in the second inning), bringing his season total to 15 surrendered in 83 1/3 innings. He has pitched effectively in four of his last five outings, but an easier schedule has had a lot to do with that.
