Johnson (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday.
Johnson has been playing catch and taking dry swings as of earlier this week, so this is the next logical step in his return from a right oblique strain. The Braves didn't lay out an exact plan for the number of games they have planned for their left-fielder, as it will likely depend on how his stamina and performance holds up. Upon his return, Johnson will cut heavily into the playing time of Todd Cunningham and Jonny Gomes, who have been working a soft platoon in left field since he hit the disabled list.

Johnson (back) has started light baseball activities (playing catch and taking dry swings), but remains without a timetable for return, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Johnson began the activities at some point last week, but has yet to move forward a ton in his progression. He's now eligible to come off the disabled list whenever he's ready, but it sounds as though that's still a ways off at this point.
Wed May 13 201521:39Johnson (oblique) placed on 15-day DL with right oblique strain
Johnson (oblique) has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right oblique strain, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Johnson exited Wednesday's game after tweaking his oblique in his first at-bat. The Braves have recalled outfielder Todd Cunningham from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move.

Johnson was removed from Wednesday's game due to a right oblique strain.
Johnson appeared to tweak something in his lower back/side during his first at-bat of the day, and the team has now confirmed an oblique strain. These types of injuries vary greatly in severity, so consider the utility player day-to-day until further notice. The Braves have a day off Thursday, and will open a three-game set with the Marlins on Friday.

Johnson was removed from Wednesday's game in the first inning with what appears, at first glance, to be a back injury, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
Johnson appeared to have tweaked his back when coming around on a swing in his first at-bat of the day. He'll be examined by team trainers, and should be considered day-to-day moving forward. Jonny Gomes will replace him in Wednesday's lineup.
Fri May 8 201515:47Johnson out of lineup for Friday's game against Nationals
Johnson is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Nationals.
Johnson started 11 of the last 12 games, as the Braves haven't faced a lefty in more than two weeks. He's not going to get many at-bats against southpaws and should still be viewed as a platoon player. Jonny Gomes will start in left field Friday night, with the Braves facing Washington's Gio Gonzalez.
Mon May 4 201515:34Johnson not in lineup Monday against Phillies
Johnson is not in the lineup Monday against the Phillies.
Johnson has largely taken over the everyday duties in left field for the Braves thus far, but he'll receive a day off Monday. Jonny Gomes will start in left field in his place, batting fifth.

Johnson was 1-for-4 with a go-ahead home run as the Braves defeated Cincinnati Friday night.
Johnson has been garnering regular time in left field, and offers multiple position eligibility. He's seeing the ball well right now and has four long ones to go along with 11 RBI while hitting in the middle of the lineup. He generally sits against most lefty starters, but he has enough pop to potentially help fantasy teams in deeper leagues.
Thu Apr 30 201515:16Johnson will bat cleanup Thursday against Reds
Johnson will bat cleanup Thursday against the Reds.
With A.J. Pierzynski getting a night off, Johnson will move to the No. 4 spot in the batting order. Johnson is set to make his fourth straight start in left field and his sixth straight start overall. He's been hot of late, going 7-for-18 with two doubles and a homer in his last five games, but Johnson will likely continue to sit against all opposing lefties.

Johnson had a big day at the dish Monday, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Johnson has now started three straight games, collecting five hits and driving in five runs in that span. Johnson is now hitting .263 while seeing time at second base, third base, and both corner outfield spots.

Johnson hit fourth in the order for the Braves on Sunday, going 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk.
The Braves have reshuffled their order a bit recently, and with a real lack of offensive punch on the roster, Johnson could feasibly see more at-bats in the middle of the lineup. He is hitting just .206 with four RBI on the season, but Johnson has shown the ability to hit for power in the past and his fantasy value would receive a boost if he sticks in his new spot.

Johnson got the start in right field on Saturday, going 1-for-4 with a solo home run off Jays closer Miguel Castro to send the game into extra innings.
It was Johnson's second home run of the season. He's already added outfield eligibility to his CV in leagues with a five-game threshold, and is becoming a semi-regular part of the Braves' rag-tag lineup. Despite his limited upside, he could be worth an add in deeper formats.
Wed Apr 8 201516:02Johnson out of Braves' lineup Wednesday against Miami
Johnson is out of the Braves' lineup Wednesday against Miami, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Surprisingly, Johnson was included in manager Fredi Gonzalez's lineups for the first two games, finishing 0-for-5 with two walks and a run scored. Gonzalez has been adamant that there will be a "soft platoon" in left field, with Jonny Gomes drawing the starts against all lefties and some right-handers. Gomes is getting the start Wednesday against a right-hander (Tom Koehler), but it does seem as though Johnson will be involved fairly often early on.
Tue Mar 31 201522:09Johnson added to Braves' 25-man roster Tuesday
Johnson was added to the Braves' 25-man roster Tuesday, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports.
Although Johnson has fared well at the plate this spring (.273/.396/.523), it was ultimately his defensive versatility that landed him a bench role with Atlanta. The 33-year-old can play first base, second base, third, and left field. Last season, Johnson hit just .215/.296/.362 between New York, Boston and Baltimore, and in a reserve role, won't have much fantasy utility outside of very deep NL-only leagues.

Johnson went 2-for-2 with two singles and two walks in the Braves' 6-3 Grapefruit League win over the Marlins on Thursday.
A non-roster invitee to major league camp, Johnson has picked it up of late following a slow start to spring ball, reaching base four times Thursday after hitting a double and a homer in his previous two games. The 33-year-old Johnson is fighting for a bench role alongside Joe Terdoslavich, Zoilo Almonte, Eury Perez and Todd Cunningham, specifically a job as a backup corner outfielder and infielder. Terdoslavich had a team-high 11 strikeouts for the spring entering Friday. Phil Gosselin is already penciled in for a backup infield spot, though he can also play some outfield.
Wed Jan 21 201517:13Johnson agreed to minor league contract with spring training inv...
Johnson agreed to a minor league contract with a spring training invite with the Braves, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Johnson spent 2014 with three different AL East clubs, splitting major league time with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Orioles as he slashed a line of .215/.296/.362 in 106 games. The Braves have some infield depth, and given the 32-year-old's struggles at the major league level over the past few seasons--he hasn't hit above .235 since 2010, he could begin the season in the minors though he'll get the chance to crack the big league roster in the spring.
Sat Sep 27 201413:29Johnson not in lineup for Saturday's game against Blue Jays
Johnson is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, according to Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.
Johnson started the last four games, but he will be held out Saturday with the Orioles starting nine right-handed hitters against Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ. Jonathan Schoop will get the start at second base Saturday, and Alexi Casilla will man the hot corner.
Wed Sep 24 201400:53Johnson 3-5 with home run in Tuesday's win over Yankees
Johnson went 3-for-5 with a home run in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.
Johnson had not started since September 15, and he may have done himself a favor in hopes of making the team's post-season roster. Johnson is battling for an infield spot with Jimmy Paredes and Ryan Flaherty, according to MASN Sports. Johnson has made seven starts in the month of September since joining the Orioles and his .217/.296/.370 slash line on the season is not impressive next to Paredes, who has surged since joining the Orioles in late-August.
Wed Sep 3 201416:14Johnson will make first start for Orioles Wednesday
Johnson will make his first start for the Orioles Wednesday, MASN Sports reports.
Johnson will play third base for Baltimore. He figures to split time with Jimmy Paredes and Ryan Flaherty at third base for the remainder of the season. Johnson enters the game with a .212/.290/.354 line while splitting time with the Yankees and Red Sox this season, prior to Saturday's trade to Baltimore.
Sat Aug 30 201422:34Johnson traded to Orioles
Johnson was traded to the Orioles on Saturday, The Baltimore Sun reports.
Johnson was part of a trade that also sent minor league pitcher Michael Almanzar to the Orioles in exchange for Jemile Weeks and Ivan DeJesus Jr. He will presumably take over third base for the Orioles, who recently lost Manny Machado for the season, allowing Chris Davis to move back to first base or DH. Johnson is batting .160 with just one RBI in 25 at-bats in August for the Red Sox.
