RHP Jake Peavy didn't get a second win Wednesday, but he did see his bloated ERA shrink some to 7.26 with 6 2/3 effective innings in the Giants' win over the San Diego Padres. Coming off a disaster against the Chicago Cubs in which he couldn't get out of the second inning, Peavy carried a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning against the Padres and left with a 2-1 lead. A two-run homer against the San Francisco bullpen eventually sent the game into extra innings and denied Peavy a win.

RHP Jake Peavy gave up three hits and one run in six innings in his best start of the season on Saturday night against Arizona, although it did not result in a victory. Peavy took a no-decision and is 17-13 with a 4.47 ERA in 36 career starts against the Diamondbacks, the first a victory over LHP Randy Johnson on July 21, 2002. Peavy topped out at 89 mph (twice) while striking out five and walking two. "The last start (against Toronto), I threw 113 pitches about as hard as I could throw all of them," said Peavy, who entered with an 8.47 ERA. "Today was the polar opposite. I don't know if I threw one and let it all hang out. The problem hasn't been stuff, it's been execution." Peavy has won four of his last six starts against the Diamondbacks and is 6-1 with a 3.79 ERA in his last 10 starts against them. Peavy had given up 16 earned in 13 innings in his last three starts this season since posting his only victory on April 23 against Miami, the only quality start in his seven starts this season.

RHP Jake Peavy didn't have much to be boastful of before Monday's game against the Blue Jays. After the 3-1 loss, he has even less. Peavy entered the game with a 9.00 ERA, but he was unbeaten at home this season. Not anymore. He struggled through five innings, allowing five hits, five walks and two wild pitches. His most recent outing was among his worst, when he was tagged for a career-worst four home runs in six innings at Cincinnati. Peavy is 23-13 with a 2.97 ERA in 45 interleague appearances (44 starts).

He'll tell you that," said manager Bruce Bochy, when asked about the source of Peavy's struggles. "His ball was up a lot. Over his last two or three innings, he was hitting spots and mixing in his changeup."

RHP Jake Peavy gave up six runs in four innings on 11 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases -- six doubles, three triples and one homer. It was the most extra-base hits allowed in the San Francisco era of the Giants' franchise. Sam Jones on Aug. 25, 1960 and Jack Sanford on Sept. 2, 1961 each allowed eight extra-base hits in a game. Prior to Wednesday, the last pitcher to allow 10 extra-base hits in a game was Boston's Curt Schilling on Aug. 10, 2006, at Kansas City. The only other pitcher over the past 50 seasons to yield 10 extra-base hits in a game was Cleveland's Luis Tiant on April 18, 1969, against Boston.

RHP Jake Peavy was rocked in his first spring training start Thursday for the Giants against a Milwaukee Brewers split squad. Peavy gave up six runs and nine hits and didn't make it out of the second inning. The Giants lost 8-7. No need to sound the alarm yet because it's early March, but Peavy is expected to be in the Opening Day rotation. It's Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Peavy and Matt Cain as the projected five. But with Cain coming off a cyst and not yet throwing and if Peavy can't right the ship, one wonders if the door is a little more open for Chris Heston to crack that group.

Peavy won his eighth game of the season Saturday, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk over five innings while striking out two.
The lone run scored on a Ben Paulsen solo shot, but otherwise Peavy was solid in his final start of 2015. When he was healthy he pitched reasonably well, so expect him to be back in the Giants rotation next season.
