Sun Sep 22 201300:51Burch Smith takes loss in 2-0 game
Burch Smith pitched six innings of two-run ball Saturday in a loss to the Dodgers.
Smith walked Mark Ellis and then gave up a homer to A.J. Ellis in the fourth, which is all it would take to get him handed a loss working opposite Clayton Kershaw. The Padres still have to be pleased with the way he's pitched in three starts this month.

Sun Sep 15 201316:56SP Smith whiffs 10, spins 7 shutout innings
Burch Smith struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings to earn his first big league victory on Sunday over the Braves.
He scattered three hits and walked two. Smith has allowed only two runs over 12 innings in two starts since he entered the starting rotation, which might prompt owners to hit the waiver wire in search of the 23-year-old. You shouldn't get ahead of yourself for two reasons: Firstly, Smith owned an 11.37 ERA prior to his last two starts and has displayed little feel for his command. He also has a brutal upcoming assignment against the Dodgers.

Sat Sep 7 201301:38Burch Smith strikes out seven Rockies
Burch Smith allowed two runs in five innings and struck out seven Rockies on Friday.
Smith walked four, but none of those came back to haunt him, except for possibly shortening his outing by an inning. Both runs were scored on three straight hits and an RBI groundout in the first. Smith is a pretty risky play because of his lack of command, and he'll probably get the Braves next.

Tue Sep 3 201318:57Burch Smith to get start on Friday
Burch Smith is expected to start on Friday against the Rockies.
It sounds like the Padres will use a six-man rotation during the final month. Smith has been great in the minors but holds an 11.37 ERA in 12 2/3 innings this year at the major league level. He should be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Thu May 23 201301:01Burch Smith gets lit up by Cardinals
Burch Smith lasted just one-plus innings Wednesday and gave up four runs in a loss to the Cardinals.
We were surprised Smith wasn't pulled from the rotation last week with his ERA sitting at 15.63. Now it's up to 18.41. He has to be a goner this time, and Tim Stauffer, who replaced him tonight and allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings, is the obvious choice to replace him.

Sat May 18 201301:36Burch Smith gives up three homers to Nats
Burch Smith gave up five runs and three homers in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Nationals.
Smith struck out eight and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the homers. He has a 15.63 ERA after two starts, so his rotation spot is tenuous at best.

Sat May 11 201321:37Burch Smith pummeled by Rays in MLB debut
Burch Smith was absolutely pummeled by the Rays in his major league debut on Saturday, surrendering six runs on five hits in just one-plus innings of work.
Smith walked two and fanned a pair in the brief outing. After getting through the first inning unscathed, the first seven Rays reached in the second, pushing six runs across and chasing Smith from the game. He registered some pretty impressive numbers through his first six starts at Double-A San Antonio this season, but the 23-year-old right-hander has made just seven career starts above A-ball and will have to improve his secondary offerings before he becomes a fixture in the Padres' rotation.
