RHP Michael Feliz, who had been in the Houston bullpen all season, was optioned to Double-A Corpus Christi on Thursday. He was 4-2 with a 4.84 ERA in 41 appearances for the Astros this season. Feliz was hit hard by the Phillies on Wednesday, allowing six runs on eight hits in two innings.

Feliz was called up to add some depth to the bullpen after Brett Oberholtzer was sent down. Now, Feliz is getting optioned to make room for Dan Straily. Feliz did not make an appearance on this stint to the Astros.

The 21-year-old Feliz will rejoin the big-league squad to provide some bullpen depth after the Astros bounced Brett Oberholtzer from the rotation and assigned him to Triple-A Fresno. Feliz, who made his MLB debut with the Astros for one game in May, owns a 4.25 ERA and 51:16 K:BB ratio over 55 innings in the minors this season between Corpus Christi and High-A Lancaster.

While the team said it still plans on developing Feliz as a starter for the long term, it won't be surprising if he ends up in the bullpen, as he isn't one of the organization's top prospects.

Scott Feldman was placed on the DL after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus, but Feliz will be used out of the bullpen. Brett Oberholtzer is a candidate to replace Feldman in the rotation. Feliz had seven strikeouts and the only hit he gave up was a solo home run in a four-inning relief effort Tuesday in his only appearance at Double-A. His stuff should play up out of the bullpen for Houston, but it is unlikely he will see any save opportunities.

Feliz, 21, fanned seven batters in four innings Tuesday in his Double-A debut.

It remains to be seen whether Feliz will end up as a starter or reliever, but he has an electric arm. He posted a 4.41 ERA and 33:12 K:BB ratio in 32.2 innings at High-A to begin the 2015 campaign.

Feliz will open 2015 with High-A Lancaster.

Feliz was impressive for the Astros during spring training, striking out three over three scoreless Grapefruit League innings. The California League may be a difficult test for the young power arm, but how he performs in that hitter-friendly environment may give Houston better insight into his future as a big league starter or reliever.

Feliz was optioned to minor league camp Monday.

After spending last season at Low-A Quad Cities, Feliz is likely headed to High-A Lancaster to begin 2015. The Astros will continue to develop him as a starter, but if he's unable to reach the big leagues in that role, Feliz has the power arm necessary to be a shut-down reliever.
